What is a Yurt?
The word yurt
is originally from the Turkic word meaning "dwelling
place". A yurt is a round shaped tent-link structure
complete with windows and a door. From humble
beginnings, yurts are now highly engineered
and feature sturdy frames, durable
vinyl walls and wooden floors. The Refuge would
like to erect a yurt that can be used as an
alternative educational classroom, as well as
for a clubhouse & meeting room for the daily
activities of our Summer Ecology Program. The former meeting place for the
Summer Ecology Program was the upstairs of the
Ice Harvesting Museum, but we have stopped using this space
since does not have a second fire
exit. During
the summer we often have two programs operating
at the same time and a second space would be
of much use. The erecting of a yurt of the Refuge grounds
would facilitate education programs, allow the
Nature Center to be open during programs, and
be a more appropriate space for crafts or messy
programs such as Owl Pellet Dissection.
We are looking for someone who would like to
donate $25,000 to underwrite this exciting project.
It is a great naming opportunity and will serve
as a tremendous addition to the Refuge for many
years to come.
